Win7 64bit setup for FSX/ FS2004

This is the result of research for about 2 years conducted by my friend Mr. Ferdi Iskandar. And with his permission I post this tips for setting up your Flight Simulator on Windows7 64 bit platform.

With the rise of complaints and negative discussion on the use of flight simulators on Windows7 64bit platform, I just have a different opinions. Win7 64bit is very stable when compared to XP or Vista both for FSX and FS2004S

These are the specification of Ferdi’s computer:

  • Processor : Intel® Core™ i7-920 OC. 3.8GHZ
  • Motherboard : LANPARTY DK X58-T3eH6-A
  • VGA Card : GeForce GTX 295
  • RAM : Corsair Vengeance™ — 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 Memory Kit (CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9)
  • Power Supply : Enthusiast Series™ TX850 V2 — 80 PLUS® Bronze Certified 850 Watt High Performance Power Supply

Okay, Let’s begin..

Here are some tips that we can do to boost the Windows7 64bit. Before we begin, there are some software or updates are required ;

First Step

  • Install MSI Afterburner (Right click, run as admin) – Set Fan Speed 100%.
  • Disable Auto-Update Windows, open control panel –> System and security –> System —> Windows update (turn automatic updating on or off) —> Never check for updates —> OK .
  • Install Nvidia Driver 197.13/197.45 (most recommended by my own experience).
  • Install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.
  • Install DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer

Reboot

Second Step

  • Install vcredist_x86 (Right Click, run for windows sp 2, run as admin).
  • Install FSX (Right Click run for windows sp 2, run as admin).
  • Enter FSX, until shows free flight page, exit simulator.
  • Install FSX Service Pack 1 (Right Click run for win sp 2, run as admin).
  • Install FSX SP 2 (directly Install).
  • Right Click icon FSX, run for win sp 2, run as admin.
  • Enter FSX, check!

Now it’s time to tweak your Windows 7.  DO NOT Reboot untill appear the REBOOT command.

Third Step

  • Install Optimize.reg
  • Press the “Windows” + “Pause Break” button on your keyboard. Choose System Protection, Turn off System Restore
  • Press Right Click > My Computer > Properties. Click Advanced System Settings > at Performance section click Settings, check “Show windows contents while dragging, Smooth edges of screen fonts” and “Use visual styles on windows and buttons”.
  • Next, click tab advanced next to it, change the option to “background services” and change it again back to “Program” and click OK.
  • Click again > Settings > Advanced > click “change”. Choose custom size, initial size: 3072, maximum size: 3072 > Click Ok. DO NOT REBOOT.
  • Click “Apply”.
  • Press windows icon  on the keyboard+ R > Type “cmd” > Type “powercfg.exe /hibernate off”.
  • Press windows icon  on the keyboard+ R > Type “powercfg.cpl” > Choose “balanced”, Click “change plan settings” > turn off disp NEVER, put computer to sleep NEVER > Save changes.
  • Open “My computer” > Click “Organize”—–> Folder And Search Option—–>View

ALWAYS SHOW ICONS, NEVER THUMBNAIL – UNCHECK
ALWAYS SHOW MENUS – CHECK
DISPLAY FILE SIZE INFORMATION ….- UNCHECK
SHOW HIDDEN FILES, FOLDERS…- CHECK
HIDE EXTENSION FOR KNOW FILE TYPES – UNCHECK
SHOW ENCRYPTED…- UNCHECK
SHOW POP-UP..- UNCHECK
SHOW PREVIEW HANDLERS…- UNCHECK

  • Press windows button + R > Type “services.msc”

Choose “Disabled” these items below :

Adaptive Brightness
Bitlocker Drive…
Disk Defragmenter
IP Helper
Offline Files
Performance Counter DLL Host
Performance Logs & Alerts
Remote Desktop Configuration
Remote Desktop Services
Remote Registry
Windows Defender
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service

Choose “Automatic” these items below :

Windows Driver Foundation – User-mode Driver Framework
WLAN AutoConfig

Choose “Manual” these items below :

Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v4.0.30319_X64
Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v2.0.50727_X64
Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v2.0.50727_X86
Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v4.0.30319_X86
Multimedia Class Scheduler
Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service

  • Install EXCTRLST_SETUP.EXE (Right Click > run win sp2 > run admin).
  • Open C:\Program Files (x86)\Resource Kit. Press Right click exctrlst.exe, run sp 2, run admin. and RUN.
  • Make sure you choose “Service”.
  • at the service list, Click at top item, and uncheck “Performance Counters Enabled”. Continue all the way down until you unchecked it all, EXCEPT PERFOS and PERFPROC let them checked.
  • Close
  • Press Windows icon + R > type “msconfig”, Choose “Startup” > Disable the unnecessary thing.
  • Click again Windows + R > type “cleanmgr /sageset:50″
  • Check all and press OK.
  • Remove all items in the folder below. If it can’t you can skip it.

C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Users\<YOUR USER NAME>\AppData\Local\Temp
C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Temp

REBOOT COMPUTER!!


Last Step

  • Run TweakPrefetch.exe
  • Option – Advance Controls
  • Choose the bullet at “Boot only” pada PREFECTH SETTING AND SUPERFECTH SETTING
  • Clear PREFETCH, and apply!

REBOOT

  • Open “TweakPrefecth.exe” again, click Tool – “REBUILD LAYOUT.INI”
  • Wait a few minutes, and than REBOOT

And You’re DONE!

Check the FPS
