Circuit Pattern Procedure

Circuit pattern flight usually used to perform landing excercises and to get more deepen your flight orientation. If you play music, it can be called a twelve-bar blues LOL. Circuit Pattern made with Visual Flight Rules (VFR). And for the VFR, ATC does not provide vector (heading), because the flight based on visual reference (visual reference). There are two types of circuit pattern, the Left Hand and Right Hand Pattern. Left hand pattern, if after airborne we turned left to join left downwind. As for right hand pattern, after airborne turn to the right to join right downwind. Here is the caption from the legs of the circuit pattern flight:

The caption above shows that the airplane is gonna make ‘Left traffic pattern’, means after airborne the plane is gonna turn left to join the left downwind runway 23. Here is the details:

  • ‘A’ when plane’s airborne.
  • ‘B’ The plane is turning to the ‘Crosswind leg’
  • ‘C’ The plane is established on ‘Left downwind’ runway 23
  • ‘D’ is the area where the plane is joining ‘Base leg’ runway 23
  • ‘E’ The plane is ‘On Final’ runway 23
  • If the airplane is coming from the south of the airfield, airplane can enter the left downwind runway 23 at 45 degree to the downwind leg (see: light blue box).
  • If the airplane comes from the same heading with runway. airplane can join the ‘Upwind’ runway 23. Until at least 1 minute passing THE EDGE of runway 23 the airplane can turn to ‘Crosswind leg’ to join ‘Left downwind’ runway 23 (Purple box).

Entering PACOTS Route to Airbus FMGC

I have posted the PACOTS Tutorial several times ago. Thanks to Mr. Adhika Lee who have made these tutorial. Now Lets try to fly it. I will write this in a very simple way without any images.

How to enter the PACOTS coordinate to Airbus FMGC?
Okay, I will use the old PACOTS Route that I’ve used for my flight from VHHH to PHNL. The Routes are:

OCEAN V2 ELATO A1 APU G587 ROBIN R583 LEKOS M750 MJE PETAL OTR14 ACQUA OTR15 MORAY 36N150E 36N160E 28N170E 25N180E 22N170W HOOPA KATHS OPACA

I assume that you have already know and set your FMGC with the active runway and the departure (SID). The steps is very simple. Check it out:

  • You will depart from VHHH Hongkong and follow the route as usual.
  • Now mark this: You will exit your usual route at MORAY. Now…click at MORAY on your Left side FMGC keys.
  • The first PACOTS route is 36N150E. Now type on the scratchpad 360000N/1500000E (Enter the number and add four zeroes behind it) and enter this to “NEXT WPT” on the Right key. Done!
  • You will see LL01 as your first PACOTS fix below MORAY intersection on F-PLAN page.

Next you can proceed by yourself by entering next PACOTS fix in the same way. And you will see LL02, LL03, and so on and so on… for the next PACOTS fix that you’ve made. After you reach the end of these PACOTS route you can enter HOOPA KATHS and OPACA. Just enter them directly without Airways. HOOPA is your entry at Honolulu airspace, and from here you can resume by your own navigation captain and happy landing at Honolulu Airport!
