Procedures for Oceanic Flight. Oceanic Flight is a journey across Pacific Ocean (as known as Transpacific) or across Atlantic Ocean (as known as Transatlantic).
This summary is just for a quick reference. Let’s start it…
Above the Oceans there’s no fixed route (like airways or intersection) that you can use for crossing the ocean.There’s a route system that is to be used for crossing the ocean called The Organized Track System (OTS)
For Pacific Ocean the system known as PACOTS (Pacific Organized Track System) or for Atlantic Ocean known asĀ NAT (North Atlantic Track). These tracks are changing daily usualy at 0000z and 1200z.
So the flight planning of the route is only can be done at the day you will fly. The most factor these track system is changing is caused by current weather on that day.
Entering the oceanic tracks is very risky. You will fly 6-8 hours with no land to divert, just YOUR AIRCRAFT and the WIDE OCEAN….
That’s why the oceanic flight planning is very essential. According to the wind prediction, and weather report above the ocean, the tracks are continously updated. This track is also use the jet stream in order to make your flight is more efficient.
You won’t want to fly with 100 knots headwind, will ya..?
For knowing newest update NOTAM for PACOTS and NAT, you can see here:
* NAT: http://occ.ivao.ca/tracks
* PACOTS: https://www.notams.faa.gov/dinsQueryWeb/ click and choose “Pacific Tracks”
Note: To enter this NOTAM’s site from FAA you need to “add exception certificate” so you’re not blocked by your browser’s security software.
Track Planning
For transpacific or transatlantic flight, you will get several choices of track that you can use. The complete Tutorial how to read the NOTAM PACOTS and NAT you can see it here:
* NAT: http://occ.ivao.ca/pilots#rte
* PACOTS: http://www.csgm.org/kzak/tutor/pacots_tutorial.htm
I will take example of transpacific flight from Narita International Airport, Tokyo (RJAA) to Los Angeles International, California (KLAX). First, get NOTAM PACOTS route from https://www.notams.faa.gov/dinsQueryWeb/ . There are two parts from that NOTAM , first part is a flight from America to Asia, and secondly is from Asia to America.
Okay, we will choose the flight from Asia to America, so we scroll down the page and see the route RJJJ FUKUOKA/JCAB AIR TRAFFIC FLOW MANAGEMENT CENTRE. This NOTAM taken by date of 11 July 2009, the available Pacific Tracks are:

Track 14 and 15 is a flight from southeast asia (see “NOTAM J2056/09″) or from RCTP/VHHH (see at http://www.csgm.org/kzak/tutor/pacots_tutorial.htm or you can see that below “FLEX Route” is RCTP/VHHH Route).
So we can ignore NOTAM J2056/09. Just use this NOTAM J2054/09.
There are 3 tracks are available for the flight this time, Track 1, 2 and 3. If we useTrack 1, we’ll gonna just fly to the north (latitude 51N). If we heading to Canada or Seattle, this is the track that we can use because we’ll just gonna fly to th north. although we can also go down to Los Angeles, but it still very far.
So, we use Track 3
TRACK 3.
FLEX ROUTE : GARRY 42N160E 45N170E 46N180E 46N170W 45N160W 43N150W 42N140W 39N130W DACEM

There are several part from this NOTAM that we must careful and this is valid for NAT too (Although with a diffrent structure). To decode and download NAT’s current NOTAM you can see: http://occ.ivao.ca/tracks
Okay, FLEX Route shows our route. It’s changing every day so that’s why it called FLEX…flexible.
GARRY 42N160E 45N170E 46N180E 46N170W 45N160W 43N150W 42N140W 39N130W DACEM
We’re gonna enter the Oceanic Track from GARRY intersection (surely at Japan Airspace) and go out through DACEM intersection (located on Oakland Radar- US Airspace).
“42N160E” etc. etc. etc. are our Latitude/Longitude from “intersections” that we must through above the Pacific Ocean.
How we enter it on FMC? for example:
for “N42E160″ type it with the format: N4200.0E16000.0
for “45N170E” type it with this format: N4500.0E17000.0
etc, etc, etc….
Sooo…the route for RJAA – KLAX is:
GUPPY OTR8 KAGIS OTR11 GARRY 42N160E 45N170E 46N180E 46N170W 45N160W 43N150W 42N140W 39N130W DACEM PAINT PIRAT AVE FIM
tadaa..!! we have our route now..
That’s it for a while
