Hey Simmers…How are ya!

I would like to share how to repaint your favourite aircraft. I’m just gonna tell you what I’ve usually did…And I usually made it for FS9, Maybe it’s a same way for FSX, just in FSX they use a different texture format….And this is just a BASIC steps for repainting an aircraft. Before that, pardon me for my English ;p

What Things You Gonna Need?

  1. A Paint Kit. Every Aircraft products have a paint kit. Wilco/Feelthere, Project Opensky, Level–D, PMDG, etc. have their own paint kit. You must use the paint kit according of what product you gonna use. If you want to paint a boeing 737 from Wilco/Feelthere then you will have to use a Wilco/Feelthere’s Paint Kit. Okay, next.
  2. Adobe Photoshop™. For sure you all knows this app. :)
  3. DXTBmp Application from MW Graphics. We gonna use this app to convert the .psd file to .bmp file
  4. Image Tools. Use this app for extracting mipmaps. Otherwise you’ll got your aircraft Texture blur when you play it in your Microsoft Flight Simulator.
  5. FS Repaint™. This is a payware. You can buy it here … I use this app just to preview my painting (I’m sure previewing your painting by entering the FS is gonna kill you.. :) ).

How to repaint:

  1. Open your paintkit .psd file with the Photoshop Application. Than draw it (I assume you already knows how to use this app so I’m not gonna teach you how to use a Photoshop). After you finished save the file in .psd file format. You have to save it with the “required name”. What I mean is, you have to know what file name is used for certain product. For Example: Boeing Wilco/Feelthere’s product use ‘ext_left_T.bmp’ for the left fuselage and ‘ext_right_T.bmp’ for the right fuselage. So you have to save the file as ‘ext_left_T.psd’ and/or ‘ext_right_T.psd’
  2. Okay, let’s say you’ve completed the left fuselage painting. So you have to save it as ext_left_T.psd
  3. After saving this file, open your DXTBmp application. Drag the ext_left_T.psd file to DXTBmp application, and click the ‘file’ tab menu, ‘save as’, ‘extended bitmap’. The popup window will show up, the file name will show as ‘ext_left_T.bmp’ and choose the ‘save as type’ to ‘DXT3’.
  4. It’s gonna be long….be patient…Now you have the ext_left_T.bmp in your desired location in your harddrive…. Now open the Image Tools application, Drag the ‘ext_left_T.bmp’ file to Image Tools. Click ‘Image’ tab, ‘format’, choose ‘DXT 3′. Next, Click again ‘Image’ tab menu, and choose ‘Extract mipmaps’. The multiple windows will show up, and choose the window with title “ext_left_T_0.bmp” and save it as “ext_left_T.bmp”. Now the file is ready to use.
  5. Before you move this file to your aircraft folder there’s a few steps you’ll have to prepare. Go to your aircraft folder, get in to ‘feelThere pic 737-XXX’ (XXX is it depends what 737 type texture you’ve made, 300, 400, or 500). Choose any texture folder you have there and copy the content of it, I say again…Content…NOT the folder. After that, make a new folder in your feelThere pic 737-XXX folder. Rename it to, for example, ‘Texture.test’. Than paste the content you’ve copied to this folder. Next is adding your ‘aircraft.cfg’ like this:

[fltsim.xx]
title=FeelThere Boeing 737-400 test full
sim=B737-4A00A
model=
panel=
sound=
texture=test
kb_checklists=
kb_reference=
atc_id=PK-ZZZ
atc_id_color=
atc_parking_types=
ui_manufacturer=Boeing – feelThere/Wilco
ui_type=737-400
ui_variation=test
description=737-400 Pilot in Command\nDeveloped by www.feelThere.com   \nPublished by Wilco Publishing www.wilcopub.com \n\nSupport at www.feelthere.com – www.wilcopub.com \nPlease set general realism slider to maximum.
atc_heavy=
atc_airline=GARUDA INDONESIA
atc_flight_number=3884
visual_damage=1

Change the ‘xx’ with number in sequence. If your last aircraft’s config is [fltsim.01] then this gonna be [fltsim.02]. Hope you understand this :)

Okay, Now preview your repaint texture with FS Repaint. Check if the line, Fonts,or any object you put between front, middle, rear fuselage is connected.

If all set, now you can enter your Flight Simulator and fly your favourite airlines livery… :)

  7. Steven, can you help me how to use image tool?

  8. Hi Mr. Panglima.
